If you’re traveling during the holidays, you know that there’s a lot to keep in mind. Here are our best holiday travel tips to help your journey go smoothly!
Things to do well in advance:
- If possible, plan your travel outside the window of the holiday rush. Just a day or two could save you a lot of time and headaches at the airport or on the road!
- Consider travel insurance when booking your trip. Especially when weather is unpredictable and seasonal illnesses are running rampant; travel insurance gives you peace of mind.
- Look up local events, holiday markets and unique activities at your destination. Pre-book any excursions that require reservations or tickets.
- If you’re traveling with gifts and will be flying, be sure not to wrap them before getting to your destination so that TSA can inspect them if needed. Also, be sure to pack them in your carry on to avoid the double disappointment of lost luggage!
- Alternatively, consider shipping your gifts to your destination in advance. If you are staying with us at StayLakeNorman, we are happy to receive your gifts in advance and deliver them to your rental when you arrive.

Things to do a day or two in advance:
- Confirm your reservations for transportation, lodging, and any dining or entertainment you’ve booked.
- Notify your bank of your holiday travel plans and put a hold on your mail via the post office website.
- Try to pack light, using a mix-and-match strategy for your outfits. No one ever wished they packed heavier!
- Download helpful apps relevant to your destination. If you’re coming to see us at StayLakeNorman, we use the DACK app for your convenience.
- Pack snacks and water in case of delays. You’ll be glad you did!
- Charge your electronics (and make sure you pack your charging cords). More preparation in advance equals less stress on the day of travel.
Day of travel tips:
- Arrive early at the airport if you’re flying and build in some extra time if driving.
- Check for communication from your hotel or rental management company with important information about check-in.
- Plan for downtime in case of delays — pack books, playing cards, activities for kids, etc. in your carry-on.
- Don’t forget an extra dose of patience and flexibility. Spread holiday cheer with your smile and positive attitude!
We wish you happy holidays, safe travels and hope to see you soon in Lake Norman, NC!
